SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
Pentecost A – May 31, 2020 Outside Service Worship at 9:30
PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP
Liturgist, Carolyn Ainsworth
One: Our help is in the name of the Lord,
All: maker of heaven and earth. (Psalm 124:8) One: Remember the promise of the Lord:
All: God will pour out the Spirit on all flesh. (Acts 2:17) One: The Spirit of God renews the earth.
All: The Spirit of God renews the earth. (Ps. 104:30, 35) PRAYER OF THE DAY OPENING HYMN “O Worship the King”
Robert Grant 1833 1 O worship the King, all glorious above! O gratefully sing God’s power and God’s love: Our Shield and defender, the Ancient of days, Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.
2 O tell of God’s might, O sing of God’s grace, Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. The chariots of heaven the deep thunderclouds form, And bright is God’s path on the wings of the storm.
- The earth with its store o wonder’s untold, Almighty, Thy power hath founded of old; Hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, -2-
And round it hath cast like a mantle the sea.
- Thy bountiful care, what tongues can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, And sweetly distill in the dew and the rain.
- Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail; Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end, Our maker, defender, redeemer and friend.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ, Have mercy on us God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be your faithful people, doing your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord .
(Personal and Silent Prayers of Confession.)
GLORIA PATRI FIRST READING John 20: 19-23 Our first reading is from the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John, chapter 20, verses 19 through 23. The reading is printed in your bulletin. Let us hear the inspired Word of the Lord.
20:19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
20:20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. -3-
220:21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 20:22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 20:23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Ezekiel 37:1-14
Ezekiel 37:1 ¶ The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. Ezekiel 37:2 He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. Ezekiel 37:3 He said to me, “Mortal, can these bones live?” I answered, “O Lord GOD, you know.” Ezekiel 37:4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Ezekiel 37:5 Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. Ezekiel 37:6 I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD.” Ezekiel 37:7 ¶ So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. Ezekiel 37:8 I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Ezekiel 37:9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” Ezekiel 37:10 I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude. -4-
Ezekiel 37:11 ¶ Then he said to me, “Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.’
Ezekiel 37:12 Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel.
Ezekiel 37:13 And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people.
Ezekiel 37:14 I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken and will act,” says the LORD.

RESPONSIVE HYMN
“Come Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove”
Isaac Watts 1707
- Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, With all Thy quickening powers Kindle a flame of Sacred love In these cold hearts of ours.
- In vain we tune our formal songs, In vain we strive to rise; Hosannas languish on our tongues, And our devotion dies.
- Dear Lord and shall we ever live At this poor dying rate? Our love so faint, so cold to Thee, And Thine to us so great! -54. Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, With all thy quickening powers; Come, spread abroad a Savior’s love, And that shall kindle ours.
The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE/JOYS & CONCERNS LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. “Amen”
